The historic region of Cerdanya (in Latin Ceritania) is a territory, which as a consequence of the Treaty of the Pyrenees of 1659, between the Kingdom of Spain and the Kingdom of France, by which Spain ceded 33 towns in the northern part of Cerdanya to France, was divided into two: the Alta Cerdanya region, which is part of the Eastern Pyrenees, that is, the territories administered by France, and the Lower Cerdanya, which is part of Spain, within the Autonomous Community of Catalonia. The region borders Andorra, Ariège, Capcir (part of Cerdanya when it was divided), Conflent, Ripollés, Berguedá and Alt Urgell. All the towns of Alta Cerdanya were ceded except the population of Llívia because it holds the title of town; for this reason Llívia is an enclave of Spain in France.
