It has a very old origin, with an Iberian town dating from 500 BC. It originated the pagus of Perelada in time of the Romans. In the Middle Ages the county of Perelada was under the dominion of the county of Empúries. In its streets are preserved medieval buildings. In Plaza Muntaner, with later reforms, there is still the birthplace of the chronicler.

This was the point where the Greeks entered the Iberian Peninsula. Later, the Romans settled. You can enjoy Greek and Roman remains very well preserved, as well as the first commercial port of the peninsula.
Besalú was home to an important independent county. It has a medieval historical-artistic complex considered one of the most well conserved of Catalonia.
