Enjoy the Alt Empordà and Girona

Where sea and mountain join tradition and art

Can Clotas is located in the Alt Empordà, in the province of Girona. A privileged environment, as with a half hour drive you can dive into the best beaches of the Costa Brava, discover the most unusual and overwhelming places of the two nearby natural parks or know the history of Girona, one of the most medieval cities in Europe . As we do not want you to miss anything on your next visit to the province of Girona, we collect here those points of interest that we have the closest.

Natural areas

Natural Park of the Aiguamolls

The park of the Aiguamolls of the Empordà, located on the Costa Brava, is a wet zone formed by brackish coastal lagoons, freshwater ponds, coastal dunes, floodplains, riverside forests and rice paddies. The ponds are surrounded by large reeds, and yellow lily and castanet are abundant in the floodplain.

Cap de Creus Natural Park

The Cap de Creus is the first marine natural park in Catalonia. The Cap de Creus peninsula is the last stronghold of the Pyrenees and the eastern end of the Iberian peninsula, north of the Gulf of Rosas, on the Costa Brava.

Albera Natural Park

The mountain range of the Albera is the name that receives one of the most eastern stretches of the Pyrenees, from the neck of Pertús to the sea. It forms a typically Mediterranean landscape. It separates the flat of the Empordà and the Rosselló. It is another example of the natural wealth of the Empordà.

Nearby beaches

Near Can Clotas you will find very beautiful beaches, some familiar, some more wild. Those closest to us are: Rosas, Sant Pere Pescador, Sant Martí d’Empúries, Llançà and Port de la Selva.

L’Escala is a town worth visiting for its Mediterranean charm. But in addition, it has beautiful beaches like Cala Montgó, between the municipality of L’Escala and Torroella de Montgrí. Ideal to go with children, as it has many services such as showers and public toilets, rental of hammocks, skates, kiosk, car parks… It is also a beach with access for disabled.

Gola de Ter

Very close you also have Gola de Ter. Located at the mouth of the River Ter, it is one of the most unspoiled and tranquil stretches of the Costa Brava and is formed by dunes. Very close to the Estartit and with the Medes Islands in the background. To get there, take the road that begins in Torroella de Montgri. This road is also common to do by bicycle as it is flat and there are usually families who arrive to the beach in this means of transport.

Cadaqués y Cala Montjoi

The beaches of Cadaqués are very rocky but close to the picturesque village recognized all over the world, we find the Bay of Portlligat with the island in front and of which Dalí was its most recognized inhabitant.

Nearby is Cala Montjoi. Surely thanks to the international recognition of the chef Ferran Adrià, this is one of the best known coves of the Cap de Creus as one side of the beach is where was the famous restaurant El Bulli.

Points of historical interest

It has a very old origin, with an Iberian town dating from 500 BC. It originated the pagus of Perelada in time of the Romans. In the Middle Ages the county of Perelada was under the dominion of the county of Empúries. In its streets are preserved medieval buildings. In Plaza Muntaner, with later reforms, there is still the birthplace of the chronicler.

Girona is one of the cities with the most personality of Catalonia, with a very important historical past and an admirable monumental ensemble. Strolling through Girona is already a great discovery, with small and large corners where you can get lost and contemplate the remains of the past: from the Romanesque to the Gothic, from the Jewish community to the Muslim.

Besalú was home to an important independent county. It has a medieval historical-artistic complex considered one of the most well conserved of Catalonia.

Ruinas de Empúries

This was the point where the Greeks entered the Iberian Peninsula. Later, the Romans settled. You can enjoy Greek and Roman remains very well preserved, as well as the first commercial port of the peninsula.

Art and culture

Following the route of Dalí you can visit this wonderful coastal town full of charm and romanticism that the genius of the Empordà made so famous, and where he spent long seasons with his good friends Lorca and Buñuel, in addition to his beloved Gala. You can visit the house of Salvador Dalí in the cove of Port Lligat.

Visits to the Dalí Museum, the Museum of the Empordà and the Museum of Toys. Capital of district and indisputable commercial center.

Figueres is a vital city to enjoy during all the seasons of the year with diverse activities: museums, fairs, parties, leisure, shopping, sport.

Although Barcelona is in another province, we want to make special mention of this beautiful reference city in Europe. Only one hour by train, you can be visiting the city and spend a day strolling its streets, shopping or in its museums.
